This Black Maternal Health Week conference is grounded in reproductive justice and joy for Black people.
About this Event
Welcome!
Reproductive justice is an international human rights framework with four basic tenants; the ability to have children, the ability to not have children, to parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities, and the right to bodily autonomy.
This space is inclusive of folks across the African diaspora, of any gender and sexuality, with a range of abilities and bodies. There is space for the many ways family and community can look here.
I conceived this idea with the intention of celebrating innate wisdom and uplifting successes in our community. While we recognize disparity, oppression, and violence; we know that the targets of this violence must be the ones to lead us toward solutions. Together, we are creating a space where we can speak for ourselves and to each other about what’s going well and what we need; as we continue to cultivate a better Iowa for Black people and families.
BIG thank you to all of our event sponsors including the Mid Iowa Health Foundation, the Iowa Coalition for Collective Change, Iowa Aces 360 and Planned Parenthood of the North Central States.
